01 The architecture

Enphase put the intelligence where the energy is: under every panel.

Each panel converts its own energy. It produces what it can, reports what it does and doesn't depend on its neighbour.1

02 The shade test

One shadow. One failure. Two roofs

The same roof, two architectures, the same afternoon. Watch what happens when a shadow passes, and when a device fails.

An animated demonstration in three scenes, showing the same ten-panel roof on microinverters and on a central inverter. In full sun, both produce. When a shadow covers one panel, with microinverters only that panel produces less; with a central inverter, the whole string runs at the pace of its weakest panel. When something fails, with microinverters one panel stops; with a central inverter, the whole roof stops.

Enphase IQ microinvertersOne microinverter per panel, wired in parallel.
Panels at full output10/109/109/10

Each panel works on its own.

Only the shaded panel produces less. The other nine stay at full output.

One microinverter stopped: only its panel stopped producing.

Central (string) inverterPanels wired in series to a single inverter.
Panels at full output10/100/100/10

The panels work as one chain, linked to each other.

The whole string drops to the pace of its weakest panel.

The central inverter stopped: the whole roof stops producing.

Illustrative values A simplified illustration of the architecture Enphase describes. In a real string system, the panels' bypass diodes recover part of the shade loss; the effect depends on the design.1

    The chip

At the heart of every IQ microinverter is a chip Enphase designs in California, running the conversion, the grid communication and each panel's monitoring. It updates over the air.1

    Gallium nitride

The new IQ9 generation uses gallium nitride (GaN), the same kind of semiconductor used in data centres: it runs cooler and more efficiently, and delivers more power per panel.1

05 Safety

No high-voltage DC on the roof

With a central inverter, panels are wired in series and add up direct-current voltage all the way to the inverter. With microinverters, energy leaves every panel already as alternating current, at household voltage.3

Built-in rapid shutdown

In an emergency, solar production can be shut down immediately, protecting firefighters and grid workers.1

06 The range

A microinverter for every modern panel

07 Panel by panel

Every panel, on your phone

The Enphase app shows in real time what each panel produces, what the house uses and what it saves. If a panel has shade, dirt or a fault, you see exactly which one. And the system grows: you add panels without replacing what is already installed.1

Frequently asked questions

What is a microinverter?

A small inverter installed under each solar panel. It converts the panel's energy into alternating current right there, instead of sending everything to a central inverter. Each panel therefore works independently.

How is it different from a string inverter?

In a string system, panels are wired in series to a single inverter: if one panel underperforms it holds back the string, and if the inverter fails, production stops. With microinverters, each panel produces what it can and a failure only affects that panel.

Is it worth it on a shaded roof?

That is where microinverters make the biggest difference: shade or dirt on one panel does not drag the rest down. Even so, we always start with a shade survey to design the system.

Are they safer?

With microinverters there is no high-voltage DC cabling on the roof: each panel delivers alternating current at household voltage. IQ microinverters also have built-in rapid shutdown.

What warranty do they have?

Enphase states a 25-year limited warranty on IQ microinverters. The terms depend on the system's activation date; we confirm those that apply in Portugal in the proposal.

Can I see what each panel produces?

Yes. The Enphase app shows each panel's production, consumption and savings in real time, and alerts you when something is wrong.

Can I add panels later?

Yes. The distributed architecture lets you add panels, each with its own microinverter, without replacing what is already installed.

Who installs it in Portugal?

Enbiente, Enphase's official installation partner in Portugal. We handle the survey, design, installation and monitoring setup, and look after the system afterwards.
