On 28 April 2025, a large part of Europe was plunged into darkness.
A continental-scale blackout affected Portugal, Spain, France and Germany, leaving millions of people without electricity for hours.
Homes, businesses and public services stopped. Many had no energy alternative.
In just a few hours, the event exposed a deep vulnerability: our total dependence on the electricity grid.
An increasingly vulnerable power grid
The April blackout was not an isolated episode.
Infrastructure failures, cyberattacks and peaks in energy demand are becoming increasingly common across Europe.
According to data from ENTSO-E, the European Network of Transmission System Operators for Electricity, 2023 recorded a 27% increase in grid disturbance incidents compared with the previous year.
In Portugal, the cause was attributed to an interconnection failure in the very-high-voltage grid.
Although the incident was brought under control within a few hours, its impacts were significant:
- Hospitals activated emergency generators
- Production lines stopped
- IT systems failed
- Traffic lights and communications stopped working
The question is unavoidable: in a country with a strong commitment to renewable energy, how is it possible that we remain so vulnerable?
Solar energy does not automatically mean energy independence
Although Portugal already has more than 2 GW of installed photovoltaic capacity, most of these systems do not guarantee power in the event of a grid failure.
Why?
Because most use conventional on-grid inverters, which depend on the electricity grid to operate.
When the grid fails, the system automatically shuts down, even in full daylight.
Having solar panels does not mean having energy during a blackout.
This is one of the most dangerous myths of the energy transition, because it creates a false sense of security.
The real solution: storage systems with full backup
To guarantee energy in any circumstance, a complete system must integrate:
- Local energy production through photovoltaic solar panels
- Battery storage sized to the installation
- A hybrid inverter with full-backup functionality, capable of operating autonomously even without the grid
This type of system works like an intelligent energy island, disconnecting from the public grid in milliseconds and powering all loads through stored energy.
It is the difference between stopping and continuing.
Between loss and continuity.
Between vulnerability and resilience.
What does full backup mean in practice?
In partial-backup systems, only critical circuits, such as lighting or refrigeration, remain active.
In a full-backup system, the entire installation continues operating: from computers and climate control to water pumps, servers, industrial machines or electric vehicle chargers.
Enbiente designs and installs solutions with reference brands such as Fronius, Enphase, FAAM, SMA and Victron, ensuring:
- Automatic and instant transition to backup mode
- Total autonomy in case of grid failure
- Optimisation of solar self-consumption
- Intelligent battery charge and discharge management
- Personalised energy autonomy
- Specialised and continuous technical support
Yesterday's blackout was more than a warning
In a digital and interconnected world, energy means security and functionality.
Without energy, there is no remote work, no online sales and no electric mobility.
The April blackout was a clear alert for families, businesses and policymakers.
The trend is clear: blackouts will become more frequent, and solutions must become more resilient.
The energy transition is not only about clean energy. It is about guaranteeing energy when and where it is needed.
